This sounds a little weird but it works great. Take about 1 cup of Calgon (yep, Calgon take me away) to about 3 cups of water, shake well and put it in a spray bottle for convenience. Spray onto your horse's mane and tail and brush as usual. 

This works great to recondition the mane and tail and gets out those nasty tangles too. Horses need a treat too, and they will smell great!
